KILNS

Kilns of circular construction are numerous on Luing and surrounding Islands,
although there are examples of rectangular kilns. These probably had a multi purpose
use, for drying grain for burning limestone for burning kelp which was recognised very
beneficial in agriculture. Although they are often found near on or near abandoned agricultural settlements Some are rather more remote, which may indicate they were used for kelp burning, one example is in the mouth of a cave far away from any recognisable settlement or any track but reasonably accessible by boat. which would lend itself to the secret production of Uisge Beathe (whiskey). with a ready supply of fresh water close by.
